Synopsis:
A pair of individuals with ties to no one, Wyatt (PETER FONDA) and Billy (DENNIS HOPPER), both in their early twenties, set out together on a cross-country motorcycle journey. Symbolically claiming their freedom, they throw their watches into the sand as they start off on a trip that is their expression of life's joy and freedom.Gliding across an awesome and beautiful American southwest, they come upon a commune of hippies and a Mexican family. Though met with great hospitality, Wyatt and Billy resist the temptation to stay, refusing to stray from their goal of reaching New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras. After being arrested in Texas for offending local sensibilities with their outlandish motorcycles and attitude, the pair is sprung from jail by George Hanson (JACK NICHOLSON), who subsequently joins their odyssey. But when they roll into a small southern town, one where the natives are far from friendly, the trio is savagely attacked and George is beaten to death before he can escape with his new friends.Reaching New Orleans at the peak of Mardi Gras, Wyatt and Billy head straight for a brothel called the House of Blue Lights. Yet, this interlude of pleasure is to be their last once two southerners, objecting to their dress and freewheeling style, kill them both.

RATED 5 STARS

This breakthrough film by Dennis Hopper was the 60's American masterpiece that was seen in movie houses across this great land and people got to see someone spark up the innocent doobie of herb. Jack Nicholson's greatest cinematic achievement. The Anger of the Hippy but the Zen of acceptance. The Mardi Gras, The whole feeling of the film. The soundtrack moves along better then any film you could try to compare. The Juxtposition of the pioneer and the easy rider and the respect given to each. The communal living, the dream of a life of prosperity without war. It was such a beautiful concept. The young and inexperienced but independent willed. The releasing of oneself from time. the symbols of this film are like a crystal ball.
