Synopsis:
Critics are calling Ben Affleck's directorial debut "mesmerizing" (Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE). When two young private detectives (Casey Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Michelle Monaghan, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III) are hired to take a closer look into the mysterious disappearance of a little girl, they soon unravel a multitude of twists and turns where nothing is what it seems. Ultimately they must risk everything -- their relationship, their sanity, and even their lives -- in the search to find her. Casey Affleck and Morgan Freeman are electrifying, and Amy Ryan (CAPOTE) delivers "a vibrant, knockout performance" (Kenneth Turan, LOS ANGELES TIMES) in this edge-of-your-seat crime drama. GONE BABY GONE "will have you talking long after it's over" (Christy Lemire, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS).

CRITIC REVIEWS
Lew Irwin
Ben Affleck is the star of the reviews of Gone Baby Gone, even though he's the director of the movie. Writes Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News: "Ben Affleck won an Oscar for the Good Will Hunting script he co-wrote with Matt Damon, but this is his first outing behind the camera. Whatever you think of his acting, he's got real chops as a filmmaker. The movie has energy, pace, some insanely well-choreographed action sequences, outstanding performances and a couple of speeches that belong in the pulp fiction hall of fame." Claudia Puig in USA Today remarks: "Ben Affleck has come of age as a director." And Stephen Hunter in the Washington Post comments that Affleck "shows that even if he never developed a memorable performance when he was in front of the camera, he was paying attention to what was going on behind it."

A compelling story well worth watching. The protagonist and his wife are hired to investigate "the street story" surrounding the abduction of a neglected daughter of a cocaine addict. The portrayal of the private investigor and his wife as a team struck me - anyone who's worked with a spouse will identify with it. The plot evolves with good tempo from the begining, and the characters continue to develop with surprising twists to the end of the story. Steadily paced action scenes evolve to a **** PLOT SPOILER **** disturbing moral question by the end of the movie.I will leave it vague. The strength lies in it's ability to make you think. 4 stars because the resolution of the final climax unwound in an unanswered fashion. Perhaps the final scene was too discouraging. I cringed viscerally.

Wow! This isn't your typical child-abduction story - where you can guess how it ends based on the true news stories that you hear about. There are several twists and turns that are masterfully executed. Ben Affleck's directorial debut is nothing short of impressive. He skillfully guides you to the next set of circumstances that arise. Casey Affleck conveys such resolute composure throughout, I remember thinking how admirable a character trait that was...The ending provokes thought, but not in an "unfinished" way - your mind just naturally goes to the many possible options that might arise for this chartacter years down the road. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it!~ Kathy Nielsen
