The Road Home

When city businessman Luo Yusheng (Honglei Sun) returns to his village in northern China for his father's funeral, his elderly mother insists that all traditional burial customs be observed. Yusheng reflects on the stories he heard as a boy about his parents' courtship: His father, Luo Changyu (Zheng Hao), came to the village as the new teacher and fell in love with lovely Di Zhao (Zhang Ziyi). But their budding romance was curtailed when Changyu was ordered back to the city for political "mistakes," and the would-be lovers were kept apart for years. When finally reunited, they married and never separated. Respecting his mother's wishes for the funeral, Yusheng hires men to carry his father's coffin the many miles to its final resting place. But on the day of the funeral Yusheng gets a surprise.
