Synopsis:
Joyce tells Buffy that her father will be visiting on the weekend. Later at school, Buffy tells Willow her parents finalized their divorce the previous year. Though she is unaware of the exact cause of the breakup, Buffy points out it happened during the slaying, a period when her own life was filled with turmoil. Willow assures her friend she did not trigger the divorce.During Ms. Tishler's health class a studious-looking boy, Wendell, suddenly begins screaming when a hoard of spiders pour out of his textbook. Buffy notices a twelve-year-old boy standing calmly nearby. Later Wendell explains that he has suffered nightmares about arachnids ever since his brother inadvertently killed his spider collection. A student named Laura sneaks into the school basement to smoke a cigarette. From the dim recesses of the boiler room, a hideous creature, the Ugly Man, steps forward. Using his club arm, the Ugly Man subjects Laura to a brutal beating. Laura survives the attack and is taken to a hospital for treatment. A doctor tells Buffy that Laura's injuries are mild compared to the first victim, a twelve-year-old boy who lapsed into a coma.Searching the library's archives, Giles discovers a newspaper article about Billy Palmer, a twelve-year-old boy found beaten and unconscious after playing in a Kiddie League game. Buffy tells Giles she saw Billy standing in the classroom when Wendell was swarmed by spiders. Giles hypothesizes that Billy may be using astral projection to bridge time and space.Buffy confronts her own nightmare when her father, Hank Summers, appears at school and blames her for causing the divorce. Later Buffy discovers Billy Palmer standing in the school kitchen. The boy begins to explain why the Ugly Man wants to kill him. Suddenly the Ugly Man appears out of nowhere. He swings his massive club arm, connecting with Buffy's head. Billy and Buffy make their way to the school's baseball field. There Billy laments that it was his fault for losing the Kiddie League game the previous week. The Ugly Man appears and gives chase.Meanwhile Willow faces her own worst nightmare when she appears onstage with a famous Italian opera singer. When it becomes her turn to sing, Willow manages only a meager squeak. Xander, meanwhile, encounters a hideous clown armed with a large butcher knife. Buffy and Billy encounter the Master inside a graveyard. He hurls Buffy into an open grave. She lands in a coffin and the lid slams shut. Using a shovel, the Master tosses dirt into the grave, burying her alive. Giles, Xander, and Willow make their way to the cemetery. Buffy's hand suddenly pushes out of the dirt, grabbing Giles by the wrist. Buffy arises from the grave in the form of a vampire. Giles tells her that everything will return to normal once they awaken Billy from the coma. The threesome travel to the hospital, where they encounter Astral Billy standing next to his true, bedridden self. When the Ugly Man appears, Buffy springs into action, breaking his wooden clubarm in two. Billy then reaches forward and grabs hold of the edge of the Ugly Man's hideous face. He suddenly yanks his hand. In a flash, everything returns to normal. The real Billy awakens from his coma. Billy's Kiddie League coach appears in the doorway. Buffy realizes the coach blamed little Billy for losing the game. The coach is later arrested. Later the real Hank Summers appears and gives his daughter a big hug. He promises they will have a great weekend together.
