Synopsis:
In the Middle Ages, a horned demon named Moloch kills a young man by snapping his neck. Minutes later, inside a monastery, a group of monks form a circle and begin chanting. Their words causes the demon to dissolve and fall inside the pages of a book, forming a series of strange characters. The evil book is then placed inside an old crate. In the present day, Buffy, Xander, Willow, and two computer geeks, Dave and Fritz, aid Giles and a computer teacher, Ms. Calendar, inside the school library. Buffy removes the evil book from the old crate and places it in a pile with other new arrivals. Willow scans the contents of the book into a school computer. The next day Willow tells Buffy she met a boyfriend, Malcolm, through the Internet. Buffy warns her friend that Malcolm may not be everything she's envisioned. Buffy notices that Willow, Dave, and Fritz have all acted in an odd manner ever since Willow scanned in the library books. She decides some old-fashioned detective work is in order. Donning a trench coat and sunglasses, she follows Dave to Calax Research and Development, a large building surrounded by a high fence. Inside Fritz monitors Buffy's movements via security camera.Xander tells Buffy that Calax closed its doors the previous year. Meanwhile, communicating via email, Malcolm (Moloch) tells Willow they should arrange to meet in person. Willow signs off without providing an answer. Buffy enters the girl's locker room in search of Willow. She steps in a puddle of water near the showers. Unbeknownst to her, the growing pool of water is headed straight for a pair of exposed electrical wires. Suddenly Dave calls out, warning Buffy of the danger. Buffy jumps, narrowly avoiding electrocution. Afterward Dave tells Moloch that killing Buffy would have been wrong. As punishment Moloch forces Dave to hang himself.Giles tells the others that during the Dark Ages, demon's souls were sometimes imprisoned inside of books. The demons would remain trapped until words from the book were read aloud. The group realizes that Willow released the demon into the Internet when she scanned the book into the library's computer. Buffy attempts to delete Willow's file, but Moloch protects itself by shutting off the computer. Fritz knocks Willow unconscious using a rag soaked in chloroform. When Willow turns up missing, Buffy and Xander realize she has been taken to Calax. Meanwhile Ms. Calendar admits to Giles that she is a Technopagan: not quite as powerful as a witch, yet well versed in all things mystic. The pair combine forces to find a way to force Moloch off the Internet. When Willow regains consciousness, she discovers that Moloch has taken the form of a hideous, horned robot. Moloch twists Fritz's head, snapping his neck.Accessing users on the Internet, Giles and Ms. Calendar form a global circle around Moloch. Giles then begins typing a spell into the system. Meanwhile Xander and Buffy break into the Calax building, where they discover the security system is controlled by a computer. Moloch traps them inside a room and fills the air with a lethal gas. When Giles' spell suddenly takes effect, Moloch becomes distracted. The gas stops and the door unlocks, permitting Buffy and Xander to access the lab where Willow is imprisoned. The robot Moloch drives his fist towards Buffy, but she performs a perfect split and drops out of the line of fire. Moloch slams his fist into a fuse box behind her, and explodes.
