This movie is great with many scares and suspense. The ending (while still in the year 1818) was a haunting surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and recommend it to you for your viewing pleasure too.

The first half was pretty creepy. But between a weak plot and a horible ending, it leaves too much to be desired. I wish I had not rented it.

The premise is wrong; it has nothing to do with "the Bell witch," though it would have you in the beginning believe that that's what the story is about. It's basically a revenge story, but why an issue of usury sets it off is unclear, except perhaps to distract the viewer into believing that the story really is going to be about "the Bell witch," whose reputation is based on superstition; from the hint given, though, she may have already figured things out - otherwise, why remind the father about what he did? "An American Haunting" does raise questions about absence and rememory, but the stories of past and present don't mesh. To tell you more, however, would be to give away the story. :) Vanessa Raney

I thought it was a great suspense type movie.I found nothing wrong with the acting at all.The movie will do what its meant to do, entertain and scare you.I found it somewhat confusing, but that was intentional. All is explained at the end.Meanwhile there is plenty to keep you in suspense. This is a good movie.

This is easily one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Surely Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland have better ways of spending their time. A complete bore from start to finish. The lame effects are overused and the plot and character development are nonexistent. I beg you please do not waste your money on this garbage.

This was a good movie to watch. It's definitely one of those movies that keeps you guessing until the very last minute of the film. Much better than other haunting movies I've watched.

This movie is based on The Bell Witch legend and was suprisingly good. It was kind of marketed like another typical horror movie for teens, but it was suspeseful and was better than say "Sleepy Hollow" or "Amityville Horror" (the new one), both of which it can be compared to in terms of tone and story respectively. Overall I thought it was better than average and proof that good filmmaking can go a long way when telling yet another ghost story.
