Synopsis:
As Cordelia campaigns for the upcoming May Queen competition, her date Mitch Fargo is stalked by an unseen force inside the boys' locker room. Frightened, Mitch reaches for a baseball bat. Suddenly the bat rises into the air on its own, and strikes Mitch repeatedly. Mitch is taken to the hospital for treatment. When Buffy examines the scene of the attack, she notices the word "look" spray-painted in red on the lockers. Though Buffy is at a loss to explain the message, she tells her friends she feels certain the beating was not a random event. Her hunch proves correct when Harmony is pushed down a flight of stairs by an invisible force.Giles begins research in the library, hoping to pinpoint the most likely supernatural culprit. When poltergeists are ruled out, it leads to the conclusion that an invisible force is on the loose. Buffy concludes the victims' common denominator is Cordelia. Angel pays Giles a visit in the library. He tells Giles he can recover the Pergamum Codex, a "lost" book pertaining to the Master and the Slayer's role in the End Times. The invisible girl issue, however, is outside his area of expertise.As expected, Cordelia is elected May Queen. Buffy examines a listing of students who disappeared from school during the previous six months. The most recent is a girl named Marcie Ross. Buffy hears haunting flute music emanating from the band room. She discovers a ceiling tile ajar, and makes her way into the rafters above the room. There she discovers Marcie's nest, and amongst her belongings, a high school scrapbook. A knife floats into the air, poised for attack. Buffy fails to notice the weapon and makes her way back to the band room. A plastic bag whips down over the head of Ms. Miller, an English teacher. Cordelia rushes to Miller's aid and she is revived. Marcie scrawls the word "listen" on the blackboard in Miller's classroom.Buffy shows Marcie's scrapbook to her friends. Inside are handwritten messages from Xander and Willow, but no one can seem to remember Marcie Ross. Giles realizes Marcie was so unpopular it gradually caused her to become invisible. For an as-yet unknown reason, she has become fixated with the May Queen competition. Buffy tells Cordelia the coronation must continue as planned if they hope to draw Marcie out into the open. She volunteers to act as Cordelia's bodyguard.Giles, Willow, and Xander hear the haunting tones of a flute emanating from the boiler room. Creeping around the boiler, they find a small boombox playing an audio cassette. Suddenly the boiler room door slams shut, trapping them inside. Giles realizes Marcie snuffed out the boiler's pilot light, causing the room to fill with gas. The still-invisible Marcie drugs Buffy and Cordelia and ties the girls onto the May Queen thrones at the Bronze. As Marcie prepares to disfigure Cordelia's face with a scalpel, Buffy surreptitiously grabs hold of a surgical instrument and begins cutting through her bonds. Meanwhile Angel opens the boiler room door, setting Giles and the others free.Marcie slices into Cordelia's flesh, leaving a three-inch cut. Suddenly Buffy breaks free and a struggle ensues. A curtain falls onto Marcie, exposing her form. FBI Agents Doyle and Manetti, Men In Black, step forward and take Marcie into custody. She is incarcerated on an FBI compound along with ten other invisible students.
