Synopsis:
Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson stars in Nanny McPhee, based on her screenplay adaptation of the Nurse Matilda books. The story begins as the seven Brown children, who may the naughtiest in the history of the world, scare away their 17th nanny. Their beleaguered father, Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), has his hands full with the children, a job at the funeral parlor, an imperious Aunt (played by the legendary Angela Lansbury) who supports him, and money problems that threaten to send him to debtor's prison and his children to foster homes. Enter Nanny McPhee (Thompson) a stern and comically ugly little woman who begins making changes with one bang of her magic stick. The children vow to make her the 18th nanny to be driven off. But Nanny McPhee is different, as the Brown family and those around them are about to find out.

CRITIC REVIEWS
Lew Irwin
RATED 3 STARS

The film received mostly positive notices, but few raves. Stephen Holden in the New York Times described it as endearing but somewhat scatterbrained. However, he had high praise for Thompson, who also wrote the screenplay. So did Kate Taylor in the Toronto Globe & Mail, who wrote: Thompson's script is clever and, despite that monstrous makeup, her performance is deliciously balanced by the standards of what is, after all, a children's fable. Chris Kaltenbach in the Baltimore Sun wrote, Nanny McPhee offers simply a great time to be had at the movies. On the other hand, Amy Biancolli in the Houston Chronicle excoriated the movie, calling it a howling headache-inducer. Hap Erstein in the Palm Beach Post called it a trying-too-hard children's fable, a remark echoed by Glenn Whipp in the Los Angeles Daily News who remarked that the film is marred mostly by being a little too eager to be all things to all age groups.
