"In London in 1934, socialite Madeleine (Olivia Williams) invites her bohemian sister Dinah (Helena Bonham Carter) to stay in her elegant London home. The sisters are so different from each other -- Madeleine is cool and controlled, while Dinah is emotional and unconventional -- that they seem to have absolutely nothing in common. Madeleine decides that the best way to curb Dinah's wildness is to marry her off to an appropriate Englishman, never suspecting that her sister's most ardent suitor is in her own house. Madeleine's husband, Rickie (Paul Bettany), a seemingly buttoned-up businessman, has found himself unexpectedly drawn to his sister-in-law. Dinah is equally fascinated by him. Unable to control their desires, they ignore propriety and begin an affair. Their illicit passion spirals into deception, offering ecstasy and despair in equal measure.
