Synopsis:
All work and no play makes Academy Award-winner Jack Nicholson ("As Good As It Gets," "Batman"), the caretaker of an isolated resort, go way off the deep end, terrorizing his young son and wife Shelley Duvall ("Roxanne"). Master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick's ("Full Metal Jacket," "2001: A Space Odyssey") visually haunting chiller, based on the bestseller by master-of-suspense Stephen King ("The Stand," "Carrie," "The Shawshank Redemption"), is an undeniable contemporary classic. Newsweek Magazine calls this "the first epic horror film," full of indelible images, and a signature role for Nicholson whose character was recently selected by AFI for its' 50 Greatest Villains. NO EDITING PERMITTED.

nicholson succumbs to the evil influences of haunted, isolated resort, already made mysterious by the fact that it is snowing like blazes and yet there is no skiiing...yes, there are words with two successive i.s in them...take THAT professor brown...cinematically lavish as always, not having read the book...yes, i do not read steve king, try not to feint...i was at pains to follow the creeping plot...also, ghosts intervene physically, which made no sense, as...if they can do so, then what is the need of demoniac possession...is an obvious classic, but only in some ways at some times, and in spite of itself...the kubrick insistence upon spontaneity in lieu of direcing betrays him yet again...not often enough to suit me...this is the sort of improvisation gone astray that lost 2001 best picture...ciao.

This was the only movie Jack Nicholson showed me he could act. He was completely in character for this; everything else he's done, in contrast, looks overdone or weak. I remember this movie from when I was a girl; it's got that kind of impact: awesomely scary. :) Vanessa Raney

Great Stephen King novel brought to 'life'. Jack Nickolson did a superb acting job. If you're a fan of Stephen King you'll love this movie.
