DOA...although often splendid visually, it seems odd that a surealist like David Lynch would attempt such a literal transformation of such an introverted and abstract book...taking perhaps 5 years or so to shoot, apparently lynch became so mired down in visual detail, he forgot that scenery cannot be substituted for story...engaging, living beings, with individual stories to tell, do not exist, and virtually human discourse is lost....the one good line of the entire movie (however accidental) occurs when a (very good) dwarf actress appears at the heroic prince's castle chamber door to announce, thusly (whispering):"i am the maid"....this movie will gesture you secretively to its' castle door, scan furtively for hidden spies, and then announce likewise, "i am the maid"....Everyone loved it, in this otherwise sleep inducing bubble of a movie...what lynch presents are the alluring beginnings of stories that all subside into tepid dialogue.....the characters themselves are manniqins...in the end, this thing presents as a travelogue rather than an epic...dune set an all time land speed record for failure on opening, in my opinion, of these reasons.
