Synopsis:
Scotland, PA is a black comedy retelling of Shakespeare's Macbeth, set against the backdrop of a fast food restaurant in early 70's, rural Pennsylvania. This classic tale of guilt and betrayal centers on the McBeths, Joe "Mac" (JAMES LE GROS) and Pat (MAURA TIERNEY) who are stuck in their dead end jobs at Duncan's Restaurant. Pat is getting restless and hatches a plan as "Mac" starts to see things three hippies, (ANDY DICK, AMY SMART and TIMOTHY "SPEED" LEVITCH) to be exact.

This movie is not all that interesting. There are a few interesting interpretations of Macbeth, but my appreciation pretty much ends there. This film is mediocre on a good day, yet better than most mainstream hollywood dribble!

I hope people stop to check this film out.My take is that the film is a look at the bad luck that attends ill-gotten gains, kind of in the tradition of 'Fargo' and 'A Simple Plan.'This film is good natured and not too heavy, and even if all the references to the Shakespeare play fall by the wayside, I think people should still enjoy the movie!

As far as Shakespeare film adaptations go, this movie does a great job of contemporizing Macbeth. The script takes some clever creative licenses with the original plot (the kingdom of Scotland is substituted with a fledgling 1970s fast food empire, for instance) and the parts are well acted. I especially liked Maura Tierney's malevolently manipulative Mrs. Macbeth. The soundtrack itself is a good listen if you're into that 70s old school rock and roll.
