Synopsis:
As Jack drives Ted Cofell's limousine, Cofell realizes they're off course and orders Jack to pull over. Then Jack pulls out a gun and demands to know where Gaines is holding Teri and Kim. Cofell insists he has no idea what Jack's talking about. Jack calls Nina, tells her he's got Cofell, and asks her to do some quick research on him. Back at Gaines' guesthouse, Eli sends Rick to question Teri and Kim about their cell phone call, but Rick deliberately gets no information, and Eli beats him. As Nina researches Cofell, she also tells the new boss, Alberta Green, that the real photographer, Martin Belkin, was killed in the plane crash, and the man at Palmer's rally was an impostor using Belkin's ID.Then Tony tells Nina that the assassin's Germany connections actually stretch to the Balkans. Finally, Jack calls Nina back and she reports Cofell seems to be a highly ambitious, highly organized businessman, who would probably be more susceptible to the suggestion of pain than pain itself. Back at the guesthouse, Kim sees Teri clutching her stomach again, and Teri finally admits she's pregnant, but hasn't told Jack.In the limo, Jack asks Cofell where he was going, and Cofell says he's supposed to meet a man named Kevin Caroll - who sells machine tools - in a parking garage. Jack calls Nina and asks her to research Caroll, then he spreads out a towel, pours a bit of water on it, and explains to Cofell how he could use it to pull out the lining of Cofell's stomach. Cofell still insists he knows nothing about Jack's family. Meanwhile, Andre Drazen arrives at Gaines' compound, insists Gaines has failed his assignment and says he'll make sure both Jack and Palmer are dead by the end of the day. Gaines begs for more time to execute his own plan, so Drazen gives him 30 minutes to find Jack.About the same time, at the Watts grade school, Palmer gets a call from Carl, and insists Carl meet him in half an hour. Finally, Nina calls Jack back, reports that Kevin Caroll is, indeed, a machine tools salesman, and suggests Cofell may be innocent, too. Jack isn't convinced, and tells Cofell they're going to meet Caroll. As Jack starts to drive again, however, Cofell pulls out a Micro Tech Halo II knife from a compartment in the back of Jack's seat.Back at Gaines' compound, Eli tells Rick he overheard Drazen and Gaines say they're going to kill Teri and Kim in half an hour. In Watts, Palmer asks Sherry if she's talked to Carl recently, and she admits she asked him to stop Maureen Kingsley from airing the story about Keith. Then Novick pulls Palmer aside and says he checked on Jack Bauer, as Palmer requested, and learned there are a lot of gaps in his official records. Palmer asks if one of the gaps occurred two years ago, and Novick says yes. A moment later, Jack drives the limo into a parking garage and Cofell tries to stab him. Jack deflects the blow and grabs the knife, saying no “ordinary businessman” has such an item in his car.Finally, Cofell drops his pretense and swears at Jack in Serbian. Jack grabs Cofell and shakes him, demanding to know more, but Cofell starts gasping, in the throes of a heart attack. Cofell reaches for a vial of pills Jack took from him earlier, but Jack holds it away, insisting Cofell confess. Cofell refuses, realizing he's got the upper hand. Finally, Jack realizes this too, and as Cofell loses consciousness, Jack jams pills in his mouth, trying to revive him. It's too late, and Cofell dies without providing any further clues.Jack calls Nina and asks her to break into his old case files, particularly one from a mission in Belgrade and Kosovo two years earlier. When Nina hangs up, Tony encourages her to tell Green what's going on, but she insists Green will only stall their efforts to help Jack, and Tony backs off. Back at the guesthouse, Rick gives Teri a gun he salvaged from Dan's van, and Teri realizes Gaines plans to kill them. Back in the parking garage, “Kevin Caroll” approaches the limo, and Jack realizes it's Alan York. As soon as York gets in, Jack locks the doors. York draws a gun and fires at Jack through the glass partition, but it's bullet proof.As York continues to shoot, Jack starts to drive, swerving wildly. Finally he screeches to a stop just short of a cement pillar, and York goes flying into the bullet-proof partition, which knocks him out. When York comes to, he's tied up and Jack is pointing a gun at him. Jack demands to know where Teri and Kim are, but York says he'll say only if Jack lets him go. Jack says if York takes him there, he will let York go. Eventually York directs Jack onto the freeway.Back at Gaines' compound, Drazen says Gaines' half-hour is up, and Gaines tells Eli to kill the women. Meanwhile, Carl arrives at the Watts school, and Palmer insists he did not hurt Keith's therapist, George Ferragamo. Carl's noncommittal, so Palmer calls Ferragamo to check on him, but gets only voice mail. Finally, Eli goes to the guesthouse, but before he can do anything, Teri shoots her gun at him. It misfires, however, and Eli takes it away, then pulls out his own gun. Before he can shoot Teri, however, Kim jumps him and Teri grabs his gun, then shoots Eli. As he falls, Teri fires a second shot (so Gaines will think the two women have been killed), and asks Kim to help her hide the body. Meanwhile, Jack continues to follow York's directions, but wonders how far he can be trusted.
