Synopsis:
Weakened by his gunshot wound, Rick falters running through the woods, and one of Gaines's men catches up to Jack and Rick. Jack sneaks up on the man as he changes ammunition clips, and kills him. Elsewhere in the woods, Teri and Kim see a car full of Gaines' men blocking their path to the water tower, so they change directions. Meanwhile, Palmer, convinced Ferragamo was murdered on his behalf (and horrified by that), tells Novick he's going public with Keith's story, and asks to meet with both reporter Maureen Kingsley and the District Attorney, but Novick suggests he talk to Sherry before dropping such a bombshell.Back at the CTU, Green tells Nina and Tony that Jamey's mother is coming to pick up Jamey's son, Kyle, and asks them to interrogate her. Back in the woods, Gaines gets a call from Drazen, who orders Gaines to bring him Jack's body. When Kevin hears this, he says it may be a better idea to flee, but Gaines assures him that if Jack doesn't die, they will. A moment later, Jack and Rick finally make it to the water tower, but Teri and Kim aren't there, and then we see them, hopelessly lost in the woods. As Teri and Kim try to get their bearings, they see a pair of Gaines's men approaching and duck into a nearby miner's cabin. At the water tower, Jack tells Rick to wait, and then heads off again to look for Teri and Kim. Jack also calls Green, so she can tell the backup teams where to find Rick.Back at Palmer's hotel, Sherry insists Palmer will lose the election if he goes public now, and says the only way to fight Carl is from the position of power Palmer would have if he does win the election. At the cabin, Teri and Kim see Jack approaching and run out to meet him. As they do, Gaines' guard, Douglas, shoots. Teri and Kim dive for cover, and Jack fires back, killing Douglas. Gaines hears the shots and wonders what they were while the Bauers run for the water tower.Though they'd rather do anything but this, Tony and Nina tell Jamey's mother, Erica, that Jamey was a traitor, and pepper her with questions about Jamey's recent activities. Erica can't believe they're being so cold to her, but she finally does admit that Jamey had money in a secret bank account, under the name Rosa Carson. Back in the woods, Gaines radios each of his men, and two - Maxton and Douglas - don't respond. Finally, Maxton does check in, but as he describes his location, Jack listens in on Douglas' radio, and he, Teri, and Kim alter their course to avoid Maxton's patrol. When Douglas doesn't respond at all, Gaines realizes Jack must have got him, and asks Kevin where Douglas was searching.Back at the hotel, Palmer tells Maureen Kingsley to run the story about Keith. She says she won't, however, and when she tells him to drop it too, he realizes someone has scared her off. Meanwhile, Gaines and Kevin find Douglas' body and realize Jack has taken Douglas' radio, and can hear everything they say. Back at the CTU, Tony digs up information on Jamey's secret account, and learns there have been two deposits via wire transfer from Belgrade. In the woods, as the Bauers approach the water tower, shots ring out and Jack realizes, from the sound of Gaines' sniper rifle, who's shooting. Jack veers off to draw fire away from Teri and Kim, and radios Gaines to say the CTU squads will be there any minute. Then he picks up an old beer can and uses it to deflect sunlight into Gaines' eyes. Gaines' next shot goes wild and Jack rushes him, but when he gets there, Gaines is gone. Just then, the CTU helicopter appears, and when it lands, Teri directs the commando leader, Bundy, to Jack's location. Teri also says Rick is waiting in the water tower, but when Kim goes to get him, he's gone.As Jack looks for Gaines, he keeps talking on the radio, and asks why he was framed for Palmer's assassination attempt. To his surprise, however, Gaines says he has no idea why Jack was chosen. As Gaines finishes talking, Jack appears behind him, holding a gun to his head. Jack orders Gaines to drop his gun, but Gaines refuses, so Jack kills him. As he does, the CTU commandos rush in and take Jack into custody.Meanwhile, Palmer heads to a meeting with the D.A., but sees Carl waiting in the hotel lobby. Palmer pulls Carl aside and says his reign of terror is over, but Carl says it's just beginning and hints that he could frame Keith for Ferragamo's death. Palmer accuses Carl of killing Ferragamo, and Carl neither confirms nor denies it. Finally, as Carl walks away, Palmer tells Novick he no longer has anything to say to the D.A., but he is now more determined than ever to win the presidential race. Back in the woods, as Bundy loads Jack and his family into the chopper, Jack sees Teri hold her abdomen and wince. And as the chopper lifts off, we see Rick, very weak, get on a bus on a nearby street while Nina reports to Green that their Belgrade contact says another assassin has just landed in San Francisco and is on his way to Los Angeles.
