Synopsis:
As Eli returns Teri and Kim to the guesthouse at Gaines' compound, Jamey tells Nina and Tony, at the CTU, that she's been taking instructions from a man named Gaines. She also confesses to linking the CTU surveillance system to Gaines' feed, but says she knows how they can turn it off without arousing his suspicion. Back at the power plant, agent Frank Simes talks to Jack, who insists he was trying to get caught to alert the agents to a real assassin in the room, but Simes doesn't believe him. A bit later, Gaines sees his CTU monitors go dark, but then Jamey calls to say she had to turn off the feed because Milo was close to finding out how Jamey tapped into them. Meanwhile, Nina tells Milo to take over all of Jamey's projects, and he gripes about his low pay. Back at the power plant, Jack confides to Simes that someone has kidnapped his wife and daughter, and has been forcing him to aid the potential assassin, but again, Simes doesn't believe him, and orders two other agents to take Jack in to the division offices for further questioning.Back at the guesthouse, Eli, who's been itching to have sex with Kim, orders her to go with him into another room. Teri tries to fight him off, but he won't stop, so Teri offers herself instead and goes off with him. As the other agents walk Jack out of the power plant, he opens a valve that unleashes a curtain of steam, allowing him to slip away and escape through an emergency door. Jack runs to the nearest street, dashes in front of a car, and when it stops, he jumps in, points a gun at the driver, Lauren Proctor, and orders her to drive. Meanwhile, Palmer and Sherry return to their hotel, where an aide, Anna, says she's worried about Keith. Palmer insists Keith will be fine, but tells Sherry how disappointed he is that she kept the truth about Keith a secret for so long. Out on the street, Jack orders Lauren to pull into a construction site, then drags her from the car to an empty office trailer while siren-screaming government cars race past, looking for Jack.Back at the CTU, Jamey tells Tony that she was paid $300,000 to help Gaines. Tony and Nina urge Jamey to say more, but she refuses without Agency counsel and full immunity. At that point, Jack calls Nina on Lauren's cell phone. Nina tells him that Jamey was the inside spy and as Tony holds the phone to Jamey's ear, Jack promises to keep her from harm if she'll help him. Jamey still refuses, however, so Jack tells Nina to bring in Jamey's young son, Kyle, and to drop off a car for Jack near the construction site. After hanging up, Jack tries to tell Lauren what's going on, but she doesn't believe him and starts to walk out. Jack stops her, however, aiming his gun, and says that since he has killed two people since midnight, she should probably be somewhat afraid of him.At the hotel, another aide, Novick, tells Palmer about Jack Bauer's arrest, and the name rings a distant bell with Palmer. Meanwhile, Sherry talks to reporter Maureen Kingsley, who's about to broadcast the story about Keith. Sherry wins Maureen's promise to hold off for a while by telling her that a government officer was arrested at Palmer's rally, and hinting there may be a government conspiracy afoot to kill Palmer. At the construction site, Jack sends Lauren outside for bolt cutters to remove his handcuffs, then he calls Tony, who apologizes to Jack for being snide with him lately. When Lauren returns with the bolt cutters, she cuts Jack's cuffs off, and he sinks into a chair, exhausted. When his eyes close, Lauren moves to sneak out again, but Jack's eyes open, and she thinks better of it.Back at the guesthouse, Teri returns from her interlude with Eli, dazed, but in possession of a cell phone she lifted from Eli. Teri dials Nina's number, but before Nina answers, Gaines walks in, and Teri stashes the phone in her waistband. A bit later, Keith returns to the hotel. Palmer tells him their relationship is his primary concern, but Keith scoffs. Palmer asks Novick how they'll deal with Maureen's story, but Novick says Maureen delayed the report, and Palmer wonders why. Back at the construction site, Jack sees agents gathering outside the trailer, but then Tony calls to say the car Jack requested has been delivered. Jack asks Lauren to go get it, but when she leaves, she runs directly to the agents. Jack sees this, jumps out a window, and races to the SUV just in time to get away.Back at the CTU, Nina tells Jamey they're bringing Kyle in, but Jamey doesn't believe her. Just then, however, Tony arrives with the boy, and when Jamey sees them on a security monitor, she begs for a minute to think. Nina goes out to greet Tony, and asks another agent to take Kyle back to school. When Tony and Nina go back to Jamey, they find her dead, her wrists slit with a broken coffee mug. A few minutes later, as paramedics try to revive Jamey, her cell phone rings. Tony and Nina know it's Gaines, but also know they can't answer without putting Jack, Teri, and Kim in further danger.
