Disgusting. I'm tired of writers playing the raped and butchered girl card. Think harder Hollywood. You don't need it. Nicholson's mustache is equally disturbing. Stay away. Go read a book.

An excellent movie, but be warned: this is not a run-of-the-mill crime story. If you are looking for car chases, better keep browsing. It's about crime, but closer to Tolstoy than to CSI. It's a top shelf novel transformed into a movie. Sean Penn (director) and the Kromolowskis (srceen writers) did a good job at transferring Durrenmatt's classic novel from the Swiss alps to the mountains around Lake Tahoe. The acting is good to excellent, and the actors are top-shelf, however I did not see John Malkovich, who is listed by cinemanow in their synopsis as of 11/4/2006 (IMDB did not see him either).

This effort uses a number a good actors to produce a long dreary movie. It is overly written and director Sean Penn was focused on creating scenes and not on telling a story.I don't know if it was Penn's first effort as a director, but it was overly directed and under edited. The only saving grace is the actors did fine work, but if couldn't save the production.
