Synopsis:
The names ricochet through Western lore. Jesse James (Brad Pitt) was the most notorious outlaw of his time, wanted by the law in 10 states yet celebrated as a Robin Hood in newspapers and dime novels. Teenaged Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) idolized Jesse, sought his friendship, rode with him. It wasn’t enough. The up-and-comer wanted his shot at fame. And when he got it, he took it. Pitt gives a volcanic, charismatic performance as Jesse in this saga of celebrity and obsession adapted from Ron Hansen’s historical novel by director Andrew Dominik (Chopper). “They’re all lies,” Jesse says of the stories surrounding him. A deeper, more human truth awaits in this ambitious and stirring epic film.

CRITIC REVIEWS
Lew Irwin

Opening for the art-house set and for possible Oscar consideration is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, a title that will certainly not fit on the marquee of even a conventional movie house. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times describes the movie this way: "Hugely ambitious and not without moments of success, this indulgent 2 hour and 40 minute epic ends up as unwieldy as its elongated title." Manohla Dargis in the New York Times is also unimpressed, saying that it merely "adds another gauzy chapter to the overtaxed James myth, if not much rhyme or reason, heart or soul." Although Brad Pitt, who plays Jesse James, won a best-actor award for the role at the recent Venice Film Festival, he receives few plaudits from critics. Liam Lacey in the Toronto Globe and Mail calls the award "a bit of a head-scratcher." But Bob Strauss in the Los Angeles Daily News describes the performances of Pitt and co-star Casey Affleck (as Ford) as "masterful and multifaceted, totally naturalistic yet bursting with magnetic star quality."

I didn't think it was all that entertaining. Slow and long... I think that they went over the top to show the "stupid" factor... but who knows, maybe they were that bad? The only characters that seemed to have any integrity was Jessie's wife and the children in the film. Overall, I did not enjoy this film, and wish I had not chose to watch it.

I thought that this movie was a fun one to watch. Not action packed but the intrigue was enough to keep me going. This to me was like watching the director's reason why Jesse James died the way he did, basically made you think.Casey Afleck and Brad Pitt deliver well thought out performances.Good Movie. :-)

not bad to watch, if one of brad pitts fans. Lacks action, pitt kinda kept it going.there is a theme in the end, and the fact that its a true story of that guy, are other positives. Overall average.

well done, and the cinema has atrracted particular praise...but the narrator insists upon reading the entire movie as it's played...and seems to use up as much space as pitt...whose ominous hovering and roman paranoia completely wore out my attention after the first hour or so (with one hour and 20 minutes to go)...if action is what you have in mind...and it does not need to be...it's definitely not what this movie has in mind...i give it a 3.
