Synopsis:
As doctors work to revive Janet, Jack calls Teri to say he'll be there as soon as he can. A few moments later, Jack arrives at the CTU and delivers the dead body to Nina, instructing her to get forensics working on an ID. Then a helicopter lands and Jack gets in, heading for the hospital. As the chopper lifts off, Tony arrives and notes that Jack had no requisition for it, but Nina just brushes him off. Meanwhile, Gaines hands Rick a shovel and orders him to bury Dan. After Gaines leaves, Kim tells Rick they need to plan an escape. At Palmer's hotel, Palmer confronts Carl, who admits he covered up Keith's involvement in Gibson's death... at Keith's request. Palmer says he never wants to see Carl again, but Carl says Palmer needs him now more than ever... and implies that Sherry bears some responsibility for the cover-up, and when Palmer insists she knows nothing about it, Carl says she was the one who helped Keith contact Carl in the first place.At Gaines' compound, Rick smokes a joint, feeling helpless, but Kim urges him to find a way out instead of feeling sorry for himself. About the same time, Jack arrives at the hospital and tells security to lock the entrances and exits. A moment later, Jack meets Teri and York, saying the security measures will protect Janet, so no one can prevent her from talking to Jack. Jack also starts to question York, which irritates Teri, but as she scolds Jack, he sees a ragged man with a briefcase, arguing with the guards. Jack approaches, but the man breaks into a run. As Jack chases him, however, a nurse recognizes the man, who's simply sneaking drugs to his brother in rehab. Back at the hotel, Palmer confronts Sherry, and she admits she helped Keith cover up his involvement in Gibson's death, but only to protect Palmer's career. He's furious and says he doesn't know what to do, but she says if word gets out he could lose the election... and Keith could go to jail.At the hospital, Jack gets a call from Nina, who says they've learned the dead man was killed between 11 p.m. and midnight, about the time they first heard about the threats against Palmer. After the call, Teri asks Jack what's going on and he tells her about the Palmer assassination threats... and his belief that Kim and Janet were kidnapped because Jack is assigned to protect Palmer. Teri starts to cry, but Jack assures her they'll get Kim back. Meanwhile, at Gaines' compound, Gaines returns and orders Kim to come with him, leaving Rick to finish Dan's grave.At the CTU, Nina reassigns Jamey to the forensic investigation, and brings in another man, Milo Pressman, to work on the keycard decryption. A few minutes later, as Janet is wheeled out of surgery, Nina calls Jack again to say they've found a custom-fabricated pin in the John Doe's ankle, which can be traced. Meanwhile, Palmer talks to his chief of staff, Mike Novick, who advises Palmer to publicly admit the truth and seek the forgiveness of the electorate... which he predicts there's still time to gain in the six months before the election. Back at the hospital, as Jack asks doctors when he can talk to Janet, his phone rings again. He expects Nina, but instead it's Gaines, who instructs Jack to move away from Teri and walk out the hospital's north entrance... or Kim will be harmed. As Jack obeys, York goes in to see Janet... but when she sees him, she asks where her father is, and York presses her oxygen mask to her face, until her struggling stops and she dies.Outside the hospital, Gaines instructs Jack to get into a silver Taurus and look in the glove compartment. Jack asks for proof, first, that Kim is OK, and Gaines puts her on the line just long enough for Jack to hear her voice. Then Gaines tells Jack to take a transmitter out of the Sierra's glove compartment, place it behind his ear, and throw his cell phone out the window... which Jack does. Then Gaines instructs Jack to drive, and a sedan pulls up behind him. Back inside, as Teri tries to call Jack, York rejoins her, saying Janet told him she was hit when she and Kim tried to get away from the boys they were with... and that Kim may have been taken to a house in Bel Air.Meanwhile, Gaines' aide, Eli, returns Kim to Rick, and he rolls Dan's body into the grave. Back on the street, the sun starts to rise, and Gaines instructs Jack to return to the CTU. There, as Milo works on the keycard, and Nina tells Jamey they've just ID'd the John Doe body. As York drives Teri to Bel Air, she notices a fresh cut on his wrist (where Janet scratched him), but he insists he got it earlier, at the furniture store. Just then, Teri gets a call from Nina, who asks her to tell Jack that the dead man is... Alan York. As Teri hangs up, Jack continues on toward the CTU, Kim and Rick finish burying Dan, and Palmer considers his next move.
