Synopsis:
Set in the 1930s during the opium wars between China and Japan, Lian (Diane Lane), the leader of a rebel movement, falls in love with Kaya (Masaya Kato), a Japanese soldier When, against his will, Kaya is drawn into the lucrative opium trade under the advisement of the mysterious American emissary for Japan (Donald Sutherland), he comes into collision with the leader of the fascist mafia in Shanghai (Yuen Biaoh). Lian mustgather her guerrilla forces and intervene before hisbattle for control of the opium market poisons both theideals that first brought him to Manchuria and their lovefor one another.
