Synopsis:
As Jack speeds along behind the squad car carrying Penticoff, Teri and York arrive at the hospital where Janet has just been wheeled into surgery, and learn which girl is there. Jack calls Teri and learns they've found Janet, and Teri begs Jack to join them as soon as he can. At Palmer's hotel, Palmer tells Sherry that they'll have to tell their daughter, Nicole, about the charges made against her brother. When Palmer starts to bring up the subject, however, Nicole tells him about some old friends she's invited to his victory party, and he can't bring himself to break the bad news. Meanwhile, at a police station in the Valley, Jack convinces the desk sergeant to let him talk to Penticoff... but as he's about to go in, Mason arrivesMason refuses to let Jack proceed unless Jack reveals what he was doing with Richard Walsh before Walsh was killed. Jack tells Mason about the key card Walsh obtained, which led him to Penticoff. Mason is skeptical, however, and insists on interviewing Penticoff himself. Meanwhile, Gaines shoves Kim into his car and drives away, leaving Rick and Dan wondering about their payment. As Gaines makes a cell phone call, however, Kim starts kicking at the car windows, hoping to attract help, so Gaines pulls a gun on her, stops the car, and orders her into the trunk. About the same time, Palmer calls Maureen Kingsley and asks her to meet him in a conference room.Back at the hospital, Teri gets another call from Jack, who says he can't come until he gets a chance to talk to Penticoff. Just then Mason returns, and says Penticoff refuses to talk to anyone but Jack. Jack goes into the interrogation room, but instead of pretending to talk to Penticoff privately, he reveals that other agents are watching through the one-way glass. Then he grabs Penticoff and, while pretending to rough him up, slips a piece of paper with his cell phone number into Penticoff's mouth. After Jack exits, Penticoff demands to call his “lawyer,” and when he's led to a nearby phone, he calls Jack's cell instead. Penticoff tells Jack that the men who have Kimberly are supposed to call him in 20 minutes, at a phone near the warehouse where Jack found him. Jack says he can't get Penticoff out to take the call, but Penticoff says he'd better. Jack calls Nina and asks her to put a trace on the phone near the warehouse.Meanwhile, Dan and Rick get back into their van and Rick expresses concern for Kimberly, though Dan reminds him they should be thinking only about the money they'll get for snatching her. Back at the police station Jack taunts a cop, Phillips, until he reacts and they scuffle, giving Jack the chance to lift Phillips' access card, which he discreetly passes to Penticoff before Phillips leads Jack away. At the hotel, Palmer meets with Maureen and demands to know the source of the murder accusations against Keith. Maureen says the body of the rapist, who died after falling from a balcony, was covered with scratches obtained in a scuffle... and that someone with similar scratches was treated at a nearby hospital later that night. That patient signed a false name, but his handwriting has been identified as Keith's. Again, however, Palmer insists his son never killed anyone, and walks out.Back at the police station, Phillips realizes his entry card is missing, runs back to Penticoff's cell and finds Penticoff gone. Realizing Jack is gone, too, Mason uses a high-tech satellite camera to locate him and figure out where he's going. Meanwhile, Jack meets Penticoff at a phone booth outside the warehouse. There's a ring, but then they realize it's a cell phone left in the booth, so Nina's trace on the booth line will do no good. Penticoff takes the call, which is from Gaines, who directs him to a car parked nearby, which he says has a body in the trunk, and orders Penticoff to get rid of it. When Gaines hangs up, Jack marches Penticoff off to find the car.Back at the hospital, York comforts Teri and promises to stay with her until they find Kim. Meanwhile, Jack and Penticoff find the car, and when they open the trunk, Jack is relieved to see the body is that of an unknown man, not Kim. Just then, Mason arrives with the cops, who take Penticoff back into custody. Mason demands to know what's going on, so Jack finally tells him that someone in the CTU is apparently behind the hit on Palmer... and Mason is clearly shocked. About the same time, Gaines returns with Kim to Rick and Dan's van. When Dan demands his payment, Gaines shoot and kills him instantly. Back near the warehouse, Jack phones Nina that he's bringing in the body from the car trunk, and then calls Teri to say he'll be there in about 20 minutes.Meanwhile, Palmer wakes Keith and asks what happened the night Nicole was raped. Keith, however, refuses to answer, leaving Palmer fearing the worst. Finally, as Jack races back to the CTU, the doctors continue to work on Janet... but then her monitors start beeping, signaling a crisis.
